Virtual reality – what is it, and what are the effects of virtual reality on the eyes and the visual system?

Some may say virtual reality is the way of the future. Virtual reality is a fairly new technology where you view the virtual world as if you were inside the virtual space, with 360 degree content. This is achieved by using a headset to project the virtual world in your field of vision.

This is a newly developed technology that some IT experts believe will be mainstream in a matter of years.

Australian consumer group choice interviewed Sydney Ophthalmic Specialists ophthalmologist Dr Frank Martin and head orthoptist Sarita Beukes to get an understanding of the anticipated effects on the eyes and visual system from using virtual reality headsets.
