Jeans for Genes Day 2018

Jeans for Genes Day is happening tomorrow! Friday 3rd August 2018.

“Jeans for Genes day is the iconic fundraising campaign of the Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI). It was established in 1994 by the CMRI to fund revolutionary research that helps diagnose, understand and find cures or treatments for conditions affecting kids, including genetic diseases, cancer and epilepsy”.

Did you know that 1 in 20 babies are born with a genetic disease or birth defect?

Genes play a significant role in various eye diseases with 60% of cases of childhood blindness being caused by genetic factors. Examples of some genetic eye diseases include congenital glaucoma, congenital cataract, ocular malformations, atrophy of the optic nerve and retinitis pigmentosa.

Sadly, genetic diseases are one of the leading causes of death in children under four years old. They are also the main cause of ongoing hospitalisation – so to fight this epidemic we need more research!
